Last Wednesday I got the cast removed from my right arm. FINALLY! I had a cast on since I dislocated my right thumb (and yes, I'm right handed) back on September 13th. It occurred during an Ultimate Frisbee tournament held right here at Rutgers. Probably the best thing about having the cast gone (besides throwing around a disc) is showering. Not having to double bag my right forearm like groceries is wonderful! However, there were concerns about continued limitations when using my thumb.
My hand surgeon informed me that my thumb healed very well, but I was not in the clear yet. Due to minor pain in my thumb when doing some physical tests he decided that I should have a brace on my hand for another 4-6 weeks. Are you freaking kidding me, Doc?! I was just in a cast for 6 weeks. But it got better. He also said I needed physical therapy for roughly 4 weeks. Great. Anything else to ruin me a little more? Oh yeah, and no Ultimate Frisbee or lifting for at least 5 weeks. WHAT?! Oh, HECK NO! Let's just go ahead and put me in a wheelchair till Thanksgiving, shall we? But this was last week...
Today I went for my first session of physical therapy. It was also my last. After my new (and now favorite) doctor preformed a plethora of tests on my thumb he determined that my thumb was healthy and p.t. was unnecessary and a waste of [Rutgers'] money. YUPPIE! Great news! He also said that it was up to my discretion to play Ultimate or not and that he thinks my thumb is healthy enough. Also, my dislocation was such a fluke that chances are too slim to worry about it happening again. Bill's back! Excellent news considering that I decided to play this past weekend against Doctor[#1]'s order anyway. More to come on that.
In a nut shell, my thumb still has some minor pain and swelling, but should naturally fade over time. I can do daily activities and play the best sport ever. Weight lifting is something I need to work back into very slowly to not overload my thumb, but still no reason to worry about any further damage. I'm not 100%, but I was told to treat it as such and it should naturally rehab itself. Where's my frisbee...
