It hasn't been too long since when I first realized that my college life was going to end and the Real World was knocking on my door. Not only did I have no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I had no jobs in mind for when I leave Rutgers. So, I decided to get on the ball and start making plans for the future. So far, this is what's going on:
I attended the Rutgers annual career fair last Wednesday. I didn't expect much going into it, because I read somewhere on the website that certain industries are generally not represented, such as media, public relations, etc. All the areas that my major has been preparing me for. Awesome. Well, I didn't let that little disclaimer stop me from attending and checking out the scene. I felt like the day was a minor success in all. I ended up talking to a variety of different organizations such as, 95.9 The RAT radio station, W.B. Mason, The IRS, Town Sports International (Philly/New York Sports Clubs) among others. I probably gave my resume to just around a dozen perspective employers. Not the grand number I was hoping for, but its a start.
I have already been contacted by a few people interested in interviewing me. The only place I have actually completed an interview with is 95.9 The RAT. The station is located in South Belmar, which is on the shore north of Tom's River and Seaside Heights; decent distance from both New Brunswick, as well as, Cherry Hill. The interview was not really what I expected. The lady just explained the position to me for about ten to fifteen minutes and asked if I had any questions. Naturally, I had a few questions, but not much. And that was it. She didn't ask me anything like what are my strengths, weaknesses, etc; nothing. Oh yeah, the position is an internship in the promotions/marketing department with some work in areas of production, sales and programming. Unfortunately, it is unpaid, but is something I am really interested in doing. If I get offered the position I am definitely doing to think about taking it even though its unpaid and far away. I'll cross that bridge when I have to. It will at least get my foot in the door for a career to which I think I want to do. At least right now...
